Summary of winning packs and applications

Commenting on the entries the judges said, “We are very pleased to see such diverse range of colourful, innovative applications and solutions using aluminium foil”.

“Those companies recognized with the award of a Trophy represent an advanced level of aluminium foil production and manufacturing, showing the progress of the Chinese industry and reflect where developments and trends are leading the aluminium foil market. Winning products were mainly based on the domestic market, highlighting the advantages of aluminium foil materials in sustainable consumption, resource conservation and emerging industries,” explained the judges.

A major highlight of the winning entries were four products using aluminium foil as lunch boxes and food containers. This is an area of the market which has seen faster growth in recent years in domestic applications. In particular one winning entry, an environmentally friendly, heat seal aluminium foil container, was used during the recent G20 summit in Hangzhou.

Chinese requirements for health and safety at large international events mean that containers made from paper or plastic packaging are unsuitable for heating to the correct temperature. Alufoil containers prove to be an ideal solution and were widely used at the meeting. They are already popular in most large cities in China, for catering, schools and hospitals canteens, as well as take-away snacks, to enhance food safety.

Another winning pack, which also uses heat sealable aluminium foil containers, was for delicious and spicy crawfish, a popular food in the domestic market. These packs have enabled the sales cycle of the crawfish, formerly supplied from June to September, to be extended to all year round.

Other winning pack styles include a digitally printed personalized pouch which can offer a unique code for each pack and provides differentiation for brands and customers; an aseptic pack comprised of an aluminium foil laminate which showed, through quality improvement, the ability to use thinner gauges without loss of barrier properties and so improve resource efficiency; plus instant noodle packaging; pharmaceutical packaging; and composite-can sealing offering product safety, health, and consumer convenience.

Industrial applications also featured strongly with Trophies being awarded for ultra-wide foil composite insulation products aimed at the international construction market; ultra-thin 4-4.5mm aluminium foil power capacitors for UHV grid capacitors; and aluminium foil for lithium ion batteries which have found increasing domestic applications in the last two years. Indeed, the explosive growth of lithium ion batteries in, for example, new energy vehicles and mobile phones, has led to domestic foil makers developing high quality aluminium foils, replacing the imported ones, for battery power storage devices.

Opportunities for Chinese alufoil sector

Speaking during the ceremony Zhang Jilin, Vice chairman and secretary general of CNFA, said that although China is the world's largest aluminium foil producer and consumer, there is still a big gap between China's per capita consumption of aluminium foil compared with the developed countries. “This is a major opportunity for the sector,” he considered.

“Alufoil Trophy China 2017 is of great significance, and can be a positive guiding influence for domestic consumption with high reference value. It helps to promote the advantages of aluminium foil in everyday life and opens up a new ‘ocean’ of possibilities to help find new areas for foil applications,” he added.

At the awards Dong Chunming revealed data about aluminium foil which illustrated the importance of continuing to expand the aluminium foil market domestically. According to Sunlight Metal Consulting, China’s aluminium foil, in terms of capacity, output, export and consumption, is ranked first in the world.

Chinese aluminium foil production grew from 760kt in 2006 to 3400kt in 2016, which means national output accounts for about 65% of the global total. Exports increased from 186kt in 2006 to 1080kt in 2016. Home consumption ramped up from 640kt in 2006 to 2400kt in 2016.

However, he explained, in the past two years, due to the decline in property values and so slower infrastructure investment growth, consumption of aluminium foil declined in such traditional segments as thermal transmission, construction and structural applications, electricity, and electronics.

Although Chinese exports of aluminium foil is still growing, it is facing anti-dumping tariffs from the EU, India and the United States, so the continued further growth of exports will encounter challenges, according to Dong Chunming.

Under these conditions, adjusting the product offering, developing new products, tapping new application markets and expanding domestic demand is becoming more urgent for China’s aluminium foil industry, he considers.

Under these new economic realities, the Alufoil Trophy China 2017 should bring some vitality into the aluminium foil industry supply chain, encouraging and guiding enterprises and professionals to develop new products, explore new markets, realize innovation-driven development, and build a new model for industrial expansion. “We hope this event will become an engine for market development and an accelerator of both industrial growth and value chain promotion!” he concluded.

01/2015 - GLAFRI ‘Initiative’ Success Leads to Formation of Global Foil Association

Mid of January, supporters of the Global Aluminium Foil Roller Initiative (GLAFRI) have decided to turn this activity into a legal trade association. It started operating immediately with 42 member companies, including 5 supporters, from all major foil producer areas worldwide.
This follows the remarkable success of GLAFRI so far, particularly the three annual conferences held to spearhead its activities. Thereupon, the supporters have decided to formalize the initiative by creating a trade body to continue and develop its work.
Initially the major objective of the new association will be to continue ‘one voice’ on foil promotion and sustainability issues globally, with the aim to support foil market growth in general. The new organization will enable more continuity in carrying out the decisions and actions decided during the conferences and allow other projects and ideas to be developed.

Manfred Mertens of Hydro Aluminium was elected president of the new and the first global foil association, ever. Vice Presidents are Simon Chan from Xiashun Holdings and Fabiano Schneider Urso, from Votorantim Metais – CBA. Stefan Glimm was appointed Director General.

Speaking about the formation of the association Manfred Mertens said, “We are very proud to have created such a strong momentum with GLAFRI that it has led to the unanimous decision by participants to form an association. It will enable us to build upon the outstanding work already done to support the aluminium foil sector and to make a strong and effective contribution to the sustainability debate.”

“Despite the continuing challenges in the market the outlook for foil with about 4% annual growth generally remains very positive and being able to speak with one voice on global promotional and environmental issues confronting the sector can only be a highly positive development,” Stefan Glimm added.

09/2014 - Alufoil's role in reducing environmental impacts of food and drink products explained

Global Aluminium Foil Roller Initiative website relaunched

Prior to the world leading ALUMINIUM, exposition the Global Aluminium Foil Roller Initiative (GLAFRI), which supports foil growth globally and coordinates information on sustainability and recovery, relaunched its website, www.global-alufoil.org.

In line with objectives of GLAFRI to build ‘one voice’ on foil sustainability issues globally the animation video on Alufoil’s role in reducing the environmental impact of food and drink products is now available in 10 languages, including Chinese, Japanese and Portuguese, representing all major markets for foil globally.

“With the support of 35 foil rollers from all mayor foil producer areas worldwide, and five global key suppliers to our industry, we now support promotion in key foil consumption regions. This enables foil producers to make use of tailor made messages to customers and other stakeholders about the benefits of foil to protect food and drink products, as well as to reduce food waste” said Stefan Glimm, global co-ordinator for GLAFRI and Executive Director of the European Aluminium Foil Association.

“Of course, we would be glad to welcome more foil producers to support our initiative and further enhance market growth for aluminium foil worldwide.”

To experience the website in either English, Chinese, Portuguese or Spanish visit www.global-alufoil.org.

03/2014 - New global aluminium foil roller initiative supports market growth

New global aluminium foil roller initiative supports market growth More than 30 foil rollers from all continents have joined forces in a new Global Aluminium Foil Roller Initiative (GLAFRI) to support foil growth globally and coordinate messages on sustainability and recovery.

With the market for aluminium foil expected to grow by 4-5% CAGR up to 2018 the industry gathered in Dubai for the third Global Aluminium Foil Roller Conference (GLAFCO), organised once again by the European Aluminium Foil Association (EAFA). The main outcome was the establishment of the global initiative, enabling the industry to speak with ‘one voice’ on issues of central importance to the industry’s growth.

The conference agreed to develop these ‘one voice’ messages on issues such as foil recycling and recovery and the industry's contributions to sustainable consumption and modern life styles. By doing so, both global and regional customers, as well as other stakeholders, will be encouraged to create new aluminium foil applications for both packaging and technical applications.

Support for GLAFRI evolved after two days of presentations and discussions covering the entire supply chain – and with key suppliers and customers present, including Amcor, Constantia Flexibles, Guala Closures, Nestlé, Tetra Pak, and Unilever. Delegates agreed to exchange best practice on foil recovery and sustainability and to co-operate to ensure consistency of messages about foil issues around the globe.

Examples of new techniques for foil recycling from flexible packaging, as well as from bottom ash waste at energy plants, were presented and new foil applications in solar and battery technologies were discussed.

It was agreed there is huge potential for foil growth if home consumption expands in countries with growing middle classes and urbanisation.

One of the first results from the GLAFCO conference, which attracted 90 delegates from all sections of the industry, will be the re-launch of the global website (www.global-alufoil.org) with expanded contents, including examples of activities to support the GALFRI programme, a multi-language version of the sustainability animation ‘More is Less’ and a full list of those companies backing the initiative.

01/2014 - 3rd Global Aluminium Foil Roller Conference early 2014 in Dubai

The European Aluminium Foil Association (EAFA) announced that the third global aluminium foil roller conference (GLAFCO) will take place from 15th – 17th January 2014 in Dubai.

Delegates from the international aluminium foil roller industry are expected to continue the coordinated actions on foil sustainability and promotion to support market growth globally and highlight innovative developments.

Stefan Glimm, EAFA Executive Director, commenting on the conference said, “Our objective is to gather more than 90% of the global foil market in Dubai – 10% more than last time. The industry wants to continue building one global voice for foil on sustainable and promotion issues to support further growth. Both in packaging and technical applications aluminium foil has the great advantage of saving more resources than it consumes, through the complete value and supply chain."

The first joint project ‘A Global Moment with Alufoil’ was launched at the last conference. It comprises a brochure in several languages and a multilingual website www.global-alufoil.org. The report demonstrates alufoil’s versatility, through the multiplicity of applications for which it is suitable. In addition it shows the methods the industry is using to provide solutions for a world facing growing population, urbanisation, climate change, and depletion of scarce resources.

The 3rd GLAFCO is organised by EAFA, the global network leader of foil producers. The conference is open for foil rollers worldwide. Previous conferences were held in Oman and Thailand. Supporters are Achenbach Buschhütten, Kampf, Oman Aluminium Rolling Company, Novelis PAE, Thiel & Hoche and the International Aluminium Institute (IAI). The strategic partner is CRU.

12/2013 - Importance of Foil to Total Aluminium Output Underlines GLAFCO Conference Aims
New figures show that the worldwide aluminium foil production currently accounts for 12% of global primary aluminium output, making it a key product for the sector. These figures underline the importance of the up-coming third Global Aluminium Foil Roller Conference (GLAFCO), organised by EAFA, which will take place from 15th – 17th January 2014 in Dubai, where about 90 leaders around and from the alufoil business will meet to discuss future strategies and mutual projects.

Commenting on the figures, Manfred Mertens, the conference chairman said, “These figures are a timely reminder of the significant role the alufoil industry continues to play and its importance to the future prosperity of aluminium production. The GLAFCO will focus on ways to consolidate this excellent performance and our role as responsible producers.”

“Despite the economic troubles of recent years production of foil has continued to utilise significant quantities of primary output and, as the recovery gathers pace, in the next five years we expect almost 20% more primary metal devoted to both thin and thicker gauge production – both for traditional and exciting, innovative applications,” he added. Both in packaging and technical applications aluminium foil has the great advantage of saving more resources than it consumes, through the complete value and supply chain.

The GLAFCO conference is set to gather the leaders from all regions of the global foil market in Dubai. The industry wants to continue building one global voice for foil on sustainable and promotion issues to support its further growth.
